Cap'n Phil

Don't know if there are any Deadliest Catch fans, but I just read this on Discovery's site

Quote
January 30, 2010: Phil Harris suffered a stroke while in port off-loading from the F/V Cornelia Marie. He has been transported to a medical facility and is receiving the best care possible. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and we will make more information available as we know it.

Too much caffeine and cigarettes dude, hope you make a full recovery

I watched one episode where he was coughing up blood and didn't go to the doctor.  He's had a lot of medical problems over the years.  Stubborn old man.

Hope it turns out well for him.

Sad Update

Discovery Mourns the Loss of Captain Phil Harris

Quote
UPDATE: February 9, 2010: It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad - Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers. - Jake and Josh Harris

Statement from Discovery - Discovery mourns the loss of dear friend and colleague Captain Phil Harris. He was more than someone on our television screen. Phil was a devoted father and loyal friend to all who knew him. We will miss his straightforward honesty, wicked sense of humor and enormous heart. We share our tremendous sadness over this loss with the millions of viewers who followed Phil's every move. We send our thoughts and prayers to Phil's sons Josh and Jake and the Cornelia Marie crew

R.I.P. Captain

Sad day indeed. One of the best shows in the vast wasteland of the boob tube has lost it's most interesting character!

So Tuesday, Discovery aired the last 12 episodes of this season, leading up to the season finale. Yes, I watched it all. (Hong Kong airs Discovery shows at least one season later, so i hadn't seen any of this years yet.) All I can say is wow, even knowing the final outcome, what an emotional roller coaster those last 5 episodes were. Even more so when you watch them one right after the other.

It was really disturbing to watch the initial optimism right after Phil's surgery (the ice chips segment) knowing he was about to die.  :(

I think you're right, Strauss. Probably knowing the outcome ahead of time just made it all the more emotional to see. One minute he's seemingly on his way to being checked out, and the next minute...

I hope his youngest will be okay. He's already fragile dealing with his own addictions. I just hope he doesn't feel guilt, as if he had a part in his fathers death. I can't imagine having a falling out with my father, admitting my drug addiction, etc, and then shortly after he has a stroke. Hopefully, he won't blame himself for what happened.

Saw a bit where Capt. Phil was complaining about not being able to breathe, while holding a cigarette.
Uh, dude... of course you can't breathe.
I guess after being addicted for so many years, it is almost not worth quitting?
My mom-in-law is the same way. I wish, at least for her daughter's sake, she'd quit... but she won't.
Wonder if so much damage has been done it won't quickly reverse itself?

Sad to see the Capt. sail off, but I hope the producers pay the families well for letting them tag along on these exploits.
