Stephen Hawkings Universe
« on: April 25, 2010, 04:03:16 PM »
Discovery Channel has spent 3 years producing this new series, which begins tonight. One of Hawkings musings (remember, he is basically the smartes man on the planet) is that aliens we encounter are liekly to be nasty beasties - like Independence Day. In this picture accompanying the CNet article, I think it is trying to tell us to go have carnal knowledge with ourselves... :o

I tend to agree with him. I don't see why we're in such a hurry to "seek out new life and boldly go where no man has gone before..."

I know we as humans are inquisitive and have a sense of adventure and exploration to us. But are we really ready for this? And it's not even something like that i worry about. Forget some hideous looking creature, its what you can't see that's just as frightening. Who knows what kind of bacteria we may accidentally, or purposely bring back, and what can happen once it's here. Could make ebola or the Black Plague look like a mild case of the sniffles.

But having said that, the little boy in me would still give anything to be an astronaut and explore the galaxy.

...

Did you ever notice how ALL the aliens in Star Trek were either technologically or physically superior to humans, yet we always seemed to "whoop ET's ass" as Capt. Hiller said in Independence Day? Seems like WE'RE more likely to suffer the can of whoop-ass than the other way around...

 I had completely forgotten that episode...brilliant as always (so sad we don't have Outer Limits or Twilight Zone anymore).

I was searching for a clip of "Stopover in a quiet town" for Perry's ant farm comment, but can't find that one anywhere

Bob and Millie Frasier: average young New Yorkers who had attended a party in the country last night, and on the way home, took a detour. Most of us, on waking in the morning, know exactly where we are; the rooster or the alarm clock brings us out of sleep into the familiar sights, sounds, aromas of home and the comfort of a routine day ahead. Not so with our young friends. This will be a day like none they've ever spent, and they'll spend it in the Twilight Zone.
